Discovering What’s Triggering Your Allergies

Allergies is the one health issue that seems to never go away. At least, not without the right lifestyle and diet changes. Naturopathic doctors have already found various methods to help people overcome their allergies forever. One type of natural allergy treatment is SLIT. This is a non-invasive method and works gradually over time.

If you or a loved one suffers from allergy symptoms, you can have testing performed by a naturopathic medicine doctor. Today, allergies affect one in every five people in America, and it's on the rise. This is likely due to the increase in processed foods and other unhealthy lifestyle choices.

It's important to have allergy testing done to pinpoint why your allergy symptoms are flaring up. Meanwhile, you can use the following ways to determine the source of your problems.

Pet Dander

You've been surprised to learn how many people are living with pets that are causing their allergies. They have symptoms like coughing, sneezing, skin rashes and watery red eyes. However, few put two and two together quickly enough. If you notice similar symptoms when you're around your own or others pets, then this could be the culprit. If you do not want to get rid of your beloved pet, then a natural allergy treatment should be bought.

Dead and Live Cockroaches

No one wants to live with cockroaches, but they somehow creep their way into our homes anyway. Not getting rid of them quickly enough can lead to adverse reactions, like coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, nose, throat and mouth. This is caused by the saliva and droppings of cockroaches, which act as allergens to certain people. The more roaches in an area, the more severe the symptoms.

Latex Gloves, Condoms and Bandages

Anything made with latex can sometimes cause adverse reactions. This includes products like gloves, adhesive bandages and condoms. These are known to cause allergic reactions, such as wheezing, hives, stuffy nose, problems with breathing and itching. It's common for symptoms to arise after long-term use of latex items.

Gold and Nickel

You hear of people having adverse reactions to fake jewelry, but there are others who also have these type of reactions to gold and nickel jewelry. You may see signs of swelling, redness, dry patches or rashes. When the symptoms are left untreated, it can lead to cracked, dark, leathery skin. Some people have extreme reactions to nickel found in different sources, such as food like chocolate and fish.

Red Food Coloring

This is can be found in all types of processed foods, including candies, cakes and soda. The symptoms seen with this allergen includes wheezing, diarrhea, vomiting, itchiness and hives. And it's not just red food dyes that can cause this – purple, orange and pink dyes can also do the same. What causes the reaction is the pregnant cochineal bug that lives on prickly pear cacti used to create the pigment. It's important to watch for allergic reactions to red dye, because they are sometimes known to be quite serious.

This is a tricky area because no two people are the same. One medication may cause adverse effects in you, but not the next person. Some symptoms can be life threatening, so it's important to seek medical attention immediately, so you can get a substitution. The more mild reactions can be treated using steroids or antihistamines. The more severe reactions would require an EpiPen (this is good to carry on you just in case). Make sure to pay attention to the potential side effects of the medications you are prescribed.

If you're suffering from allergies caused by everyday non-toxic items, like food, pet dander and insects, then you should seek natural allergy treatment .

Having a Nut Allergy? That’s Me

“Do not you wish to have a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup here and there?” No. I do not. Your thoughts on how good a Peanut Butter Cup is not going to make me consider risking my life for trying one. Why would that be a good idea?

I've been allergic to peanuts and other nuts since I was less than one year old. Has it gotten better or improved? Can I try certain nuts now since I've gotten older? Absolutely not. In fact, it may have gotten worse. I've run into accidentally eating peanuts here and there while growing up, and the side effects as a result are terrible. Your face swells up like a balloon, it gets tough to breathe, and you end up vomiting, either at the beginning of the reaction or towards the end. One time I was in a grocery store eating samples like any other customer that was there, and ended up finding a nut in a product that said it may have contained nuts. It got so bad and I had such a hard time breathing that I ended up being rushed to the ER by my parents and the doctors shot me up with Epinephrine. Another time I was at a friend's house and ate something that had nuts in it. I had trouble breathing but decided it was a good idea to just sleep. Bad idea.

So what do I think about the price hike with the Mylan EpiPen injectors in the last year? I think it's pretty ridiculous but there's cheaper, generic alternatives out there that you can purchase. For the EpiPen injector price hike though, from increasing the price from $ 100 to $ 600 in the span of seven years is mind blowing to say the least. Do they know how many people have nut allergies and need that in dire situations? I believe that as a result with the big brand product increasing their prices for their product, many current EpiPen users will either be in the situation where they'll take the risk and live without it, use expired ones if they have to renew it, or be forced to pay the increased price. Also, a lot of people do not know that there are generic versions of the injector too. You just have to go to the pharmacist and ask for / if they have the generic Epinephrine injector. It's around a sixth of the price of the Mylan Epipen.

So what have I done to be safe around any kinds of nuts? It's a simple and easy answer: I try my best to avoid it. Is it tough though? Definitely. So many different things are cooked or have some sort of nut in it, and sometimes it's difficult to decipher if something has nuts. Also, living with a partner who consistently eats peanut butter is tough. There have been horror stories where someone with nut allergies has gotten an allergic reaction from kissing their partner who recently consumed some sort of nut. In some situations where has occurred, the person who got a reaction died. Those stories are usually what are on my mind when I'm in situations like that where my partner had just consumed peanuts. That being said, being careful is key to avoiding hurting yourself and others.
