Consider temporarily eliminating the foods that are common offenders: milk, eggs, wheat, soy, corn, peanuts, sugar and artificial sweeteners. This can be done one at a time or all at once. When I work with patients, I will often have them first go off dairy for one week, then challenge their bodies by drinking a glass or two of milk, and follow their symptoms for the next 48-72 hours. This is called an elimination-challenge test. It can be repeated with the other food items. Foods that have caused acute allergies such as hives and airway swelling are strictly avoided.

The book Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis gives great insight regarding the effects that modern wheat hybrids can have on your heart, as well as your gut, and suggests eliminating processed wheat from your diet.

JJ Virgin, author of The Virgin Diet , suggests a 21-day cleansing period in which you eliminate all of the culprits listed above (milk, eggs, wheat, soy, corn, peanuts, sugar and artificial sweeteners), then add items back one at a time, one week at a time, to assess which ones are problematic for you personally.

Effectively Managing Indoor Allergies – 10 Things You Can Do To Breathe Easier Indoors

In order to effectively manage indoor allergies, you must avoid the triggers. Here are 10 ways to minimize the irritants that you are exposed, limit your symptoms and experience a better quality of life.

1. Keep humidity levels low. This will cut down on the mite population as they grow best with humidity levels that are above 30%. Since they need moisture to survive, keeping the air reliably dry will kill them naturally.

2. Keep a cool house. Mites like temperatures that are 77 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer. Keep temperatures cooler that this in both winter and summer months, and it will help make it tougher for them to thrive in your home.

3. Clean with moisture. Use a cloth or mop that is damp with water or oil to reliably collect and eliminate particles.

4. Change filters on the central air and heating system as frequently as necessary to avoid a build-up of dust that can be sent back into the air.

5. Make your home more allergy-friendly by eliminating carpets, heavily upholstered furniture, blinds, and shutters. These all make it easy for particles to collect in huge numbers and to be sent sent into the air with normal activity.

6. Each month, clean the places that you might not take the time to clean on a regular basis. These places include walls, ceiling, light fixtures, and moldings .. It should be someone other than the allergic person doing this. And it's a good idea to let the dust settle out of the air for several hours before having the affected person return home.

7. Take moisture out of bathroom air immediately each time after baths and showers with the fan. This will reduce the possibility of mold and mildew growth. A dry environment discourages growth which means there will be fewer spores available to become airborne.

8. A dry basement goes a long way towards reducing the mold spore coownt. Waterproof the outside foundation walls, and paint the interior will a mold-resistant paint. Use a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels below 30% and avoid using carpet on concrete floors as it will make a haven for mold to multiply.

9. Make a comfortable shelter outdoors for your pets .. In extreme heat and / or cold, make the major of areas in your home pet-free. OK, so if you're a soft touch this is probably not going to work.

So try making the bedroom off limits. And if that's hard too, try to keep them off the bed

10. Use a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting air purifier to continuously clear the air of particles that are inherent to indoor living and those that are constantly beingrought in from the outside.

Allergies Again?

It's spring time! It's Allergy Time … again! The effects of allergies can be found in spring, summer and fall; however, each season has different sources of pollen. The most common cause of allergies in the spring is pollen from grass, trees and weeds. When pollen is inhaled through the nose of someone who has allergies, the immune system will react as if the pollen is a foreign invader and the immune system will release antibodies to protect the body. When the antibodies attack the allergens, a chemical known as Histamine will trigger the “allergy reactions” that can wreak havoc on our spring enjoyment.

On windy days allergy symptoms are usually elevated due to the breeze carrying pollen through the air. While we may prefer the sun, the rainy days will likely bring relief. The rain can cause a drop in pollen by washing away the allergens in the air.

Symptoms of allergies include dark circles under the eyes, sneezing, coughing, itchy nose and eyes, watery eyes and runny nose. Keep in mind, the airborne allergens can also trigger a more serious condition, asthma. An asthma attack can result in the narrowing of the airway, making breathing difficult and increasing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Frequently a person can use preventive measures to minimize the effects of allergies. Unfortunately, many of us wait until we are “suffering” from severe symptoms before we take action … making it more difficult to treat and control.

While you can not control mother nature, you can take steps to minimize your exposure to pollen.

– Keep windows closed and limit being outside when pollen is at its peak during the day.

– Keep car windows closed and use air conditioner (to avoid circulating pollen through vents)

– Take advantage of pollen reports for your area.

– Do not dry clothing or sheets outside. (pollen can collect in clothing)

– Shower at night to remove any pollen / spores from skin and hair.

– Clean heating ducts before turning on heat for the first time (allergens can be trapped in vents over the summer)

– Do not mow the grass or rake leaves if you have allergy symptoms.

Take an offensive approach against allergies by checking both herbal supplements as well as over the counter and prescription allergy preventives. Discuss with your doctor the choices best for you and your medical conditions and needs.

These are just a few suggestions to help you prepare for the fall allergy season.

Using Affirmations To Help Those With (And Without) Food Allergies

Affirmations are so important. We need to constantly be feeding positive words into others, especially our children. The words we choose to speak can help build their own self-confidence during their youth and carry on into their adulthood.

Affirmations can also be a great tool in helping your child accept and learn about their food allergy. “You're doing such a great job always asking before you eat something” and “I'm so proud of you”, are just some examples of encouraging things you can say every day. Not only do these words help raise their self-esteem, but they also teach them important safety lessons.

Have you ever heard the ratio it takes for a positive comment to counteract a negative one? I've heard the range is somewhere between 2-10. That's 2-10 positive comments are needed to remove the damage of 1 negative comment.

The sad part is, we do not always know what discouraging words our child is hearing and how many times they're hearing it. Often, we do not even know how our child is feeling either, especially when they become a tween or teenager.

It's important to always pay attention to what your child is saying, both directly and indirectly. Listen when they're talking to their toys or friends. Try having conversations with them about different issues they might be facing. This could help you find out how they're really feeling.

Children will experience different emotions about their food allergy during different times in their lives. They're often feel like they're different, especially if they're left out during parties and other food related events at school. Try to help counteract any negative comments that they've heard or emotions they might be feeling.

Let them know they're not alone. Try finding other children with food allergies that they can build a friendship. There are support groups like No Nuts Moms Groups, FAAN, and Kids With Food Allergies that can be an excellent resource found in your community. And of course, make sure they're always listening that you're there to listen and help them through any situation.

A child with food allergies may need daily doses of encouragement to help build them up. But then again, that's something that ALL children really need to be given. Try to say a minimum of 6 positive comments each day to your child. Not only will it help repair the damage of any negative, but it will help build a positive future for them.
