Diagnosis and Treatment of Allergic Shiners

Diagnosis

In order to properly treat an individual that is experiencing discomfort from Allergic shiners, one must first diagnose what is the actual cause of the inflammation in the nasal passages. By contacting, and making an appointment with your personal physician, you can get the proper conventional testing method that is needed in order for a diagnoses. Remember, it is always very important to contact your doctor when you are experiencing any type of persisting illness, or discomfort, lest it lead to a further, serious illness, or injury. It has been found that without the correct treatment even simple allergies can lead to more serious illness that could be possibly life threatening. You can be sure that by explaining all of your symptoms in a prompt manner to your physician that he / she can work with you to combat your allergies, or illnesses in a direct fashion.

Treatment

The goal is to decrease the swelling of the eyelids, and to decrease dark pigmentation. In order to allow for the swelling to go down, and for the pigmentation to subside, doctors may utilize a variety of separate methods to aid in the healing of your allergies, or illness. A few of the contrasting approaches to relieving allergen symptoms that can cause shiners are listed below.

  • Steroids – A doctor may prescribe a dosage of steroids to help you body fight off the allergens that are causing unpleasant side effects.
  • Antihistamines – Antihistamines work by helping inflammation to subside, allowing to easier air passage, and helping to relieve side effects.
  • Decongestants – By using a decongestant you may find that when you nasal passes have more air flow that the side effects, like shiners, will subside more easily.
  • Allergy Shots – If you know that you are apt to get seasonal allergies it might be a good idea to start getting annual allergy shots; These will help to lessen the risk of Allergic shiners.
  • Rinsing your sinuses – Simply by rinsing out clogged sinuses with clean, cool, distilled water, many patients have found immediate relief of their symptoms.

All in all, patients that are experiencing the disturbing case of shiners, and puffy eyelids are finding that by contacting their local personal physician, and by practicing just a few small steps, they too can avoid ever having to deal with Allergic Shiners again. Once again, make sure that if you are ever encountering any type of persisting illness, it is imperative that you contact your doctor at once.

A New Natural Treatment for Cat Allergy

New research into cat allergy and the recent arrival of Cat Allergy Desensitisation Drops promise relief from the debilitating symptoms that come with this common allergy.

When a cat licks itself, it spreads saliva, skin cells and hormones on to its fur. Then, when the hair falls out, it transfers the protein responsible for allergic reactions in humans onto sofas, rugs, tabletops and even the air. It also gets stuck to people's clothes and shoes, and is tracked all over.

This allergen, Feld1, in the skin and hair of cats is one of the most difficult airborne allergens to eliminate. Even when a cat no longer lives there, its allergen can float about for years after it has left its home.

The protein in the cat's dander reacts with a common environmental bacterial toxin known as lipopolysaccharides, or LPS. When these two contaminates combine, they activate an immune receptor in humans called TLR 4. That's when we begin to sneeze. Cat allergy attacks range from sneezing, coughing, tightness of chest and wheezing to hives or a rash on the chest and face. Red, itchy eyes is another common consequence of cat allergies. These symptoms usually get worse after touching a cat or after you have entered a room where a cat is, or has been, present.

Scientists now know that a cure for cat allergy will involve blocking this protein from reacting with the immune system.

Latest research

Adiga Life Sciences, a biomedical research firm based in Alberta USA has announced that they have reached a breakthrough in their quest for a cat allergy vaccine. Early trials were successful and Adiga has begun fine-tuning the dosage of the vaccine.

While this is very exciting news indeed, it could still take 10 to 20 years for this kind of product to pass through the trials and regulation necessary to enter the marketplace.

Meanwhile in Britain researchers at Cambridge University who located the protein in cat dander that triggers an allergic reaction say their cat allergy research may be able to deliver a cure, as either a pill or through an inhaler, within the next five years. “This is the first time we have discovered the process that leads to the allergic reaction, “Dr. Clare Bryant, lead author of the cat allergy research study, said “It opens up a whole new type of drug to treat it.”

Until these drugs become available, cat allergics must struggle to avoid friends and family who own a cat or face the heartbreaking prospect of having to re-house their own beloved pet.

Natural breakthrough

However some new Cat Allergy Desensitization Drops have recently come onto the market to offer a natural alternative. Created In association with The British Institute for Allergy and Environmental Therapy, the Drops work on the same homeopathic principle of treating like with like as already hugely successful Hayfever Desensitization Drops.

This Homeopathic Sublingual Immunotherapy, as it is known, involves taking tiny, dilute doses of cat allergen under the tongue over a period of time. This helps the body get used to the allergen and stop it seeing cats as the enemy and reacting with the symptoms of allergy. How long desensitisation takes depends on the individual, but most users report a reduction in the severity of symptoms within a couple of weeks.

Cat Allergy Desensitization Drops are all-natural, suitable for adults and children over 3 and if you're desperate to keep your cat, could be well worth a try.

Anaphylactic Shock Treatment – What It Is Involved in

Anaphylaxis is a chronic, potentially life threatening allergic reaction. The condition can occur seconds or minutes after you have been exposed to something you are allergic to, like venom from an insect sting or peanuts. The large quantities of chemicals released by the immune system can cause shock: the blood pressure drops while the airways narrow, curtailing normal breathing. The symptoms of anaphylaxis include weakness, rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting and a skin rash. The main triggers of the condition include some medication, latex, insect venom and foods. The anaphylactic shock treatment involves:

1. Emergency treatment

Call your emergency hot line in your location. Check the individual's airway, breathing and circulation. The signs of a serious throat swapping are course sounds, a whispered or very hoarse voice when breathing. If necessary, perform rescue breathing and calm the person. If the reaction is from an insect sting, scrape off the stinger from the skin using something firm like a plastic credit card or fingernail. Avoid using tweezers. Squeezing the stinger can release more venom.

Furthermore, if the person uses allergy medicines, you can help the person inject or take the medication. If the person is experiencing difficulty breathing, avoid oral medication. You can also take steps to prevent shock. Get the person lying flat on his / her back, raise the feet 12 inches up and cover him / her using a blanket or coat. However, avoid this position if you suspect discomfort, a head, back, neck or leg injury.

2. Immediate trip to the doctor

If anaphylaxis is not treated immediately, patience can become unconscious or die. The condition calls for an immediate admission to the emergency unit to manage this life threatening condition particularly when a patient experiences a severe attack. The condition can stop breathing and stop the heartbeat. Therefore, the patient will require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In addition, they will be given medications, such as epinephrine, a beta-agonist, oxygen, cortisone and intravenous (IV) antihistamines.

3. Tests and diagnosis

The doctor will need to diagnose the condition by asking about any allergic reactions you have had. He / she will seek to find out if there are any foods that cause reactions; any medication that produce some symptoms; any allergic symptoms when the skin is exposed to latex; or any symptoms associated with any insect sting. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor will test you for allergies using blood tests or skin tests. He / she may ask you to keep a list of your foods or to temporarily eat eating certain foods. The test will help the doctor to rule out other health conditions responsible for your symptoms including heart / lung problems, psychological issues (ie panic attacks), mastocytosis and seizure disorders.

4. Long-term treatment

The doctor will advise you to avoid all the known allergy triggers. If the reactions are triggered by insect stings, the doctor may recommend several allergy shots (immunotherapy). This helps to reduce the body's allergic reaction and prevent future severe reactions. The doctor may also recommend prednisone or antihistamines.

Eyelid Inflammation: A Common Eye Disease

Blepharitis is a common swelling of the eyelids involving the part of it where the eyelashes grow. It is the result of malfunctioning of minuscule oily glans located at the end of the eyelashes. This causes irritation, inflammation and eyelids getting itchy. Multiple disorders and health conditions are held responsible for causing Blepharitis.

Blepharitis is often termed as a chronic condition because sometimes it is difficult to treat. It may be unpleasant, scratchy but normally does not affect the eyes permanently.

Symptoms

The symptoms are as follows:

– Red and watery eyes
– Burning sensation in the eyes
– Red or swollen eyelids
– Shedding of the skin around the eyes
– Coated eyeballs upon awakening
– Sticky eyelids
– Unusual or regular blinking
– Subtletty to light
– Eyelash loss

Time For Eye Specialist To Step In

If you have been experiencing Blepharitis symptoms for some time and things are looking any brighter, make an appointment with your eye specialist. You can also try cleaning the affected area and maintain hygiene.

Causes

There is uncertainty over the causes of Blepharitis. However, eye specialists have listed out some:

– Dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows known as Seborrheic dermatitis.
– Functional issues with the oil glands in the eyelids.
– Multiple allergies which include allergies to medicines, makeup or contact lenses.
– Acne medicine- isotretinoin can lead to enlargement in bacteria on the eyelids.
– It can be caused by a combination of other factors.

What If You Have Blepharitis?

Unfortunately, if you suffer from eyelid infection, you may face:

1. Problems with the Eyelashes: Blepharitis is responsible for your eyelashes to grow abnormally or fall out.

2. Eyelid Skin Problems: In response to long term Blepharitis, scratch marks may appear on the eyelids.

3. Dry Eyes or Excessive Tearing: Unusual oily stuff and other particles shed from the eyelid including flaking that can mount up in the tear film. Abnormal tear film restricts eyelids to function normally and interferes with the lubrication. This condition can cause irritation in the eyes further leading to dryness.

4. Problem Wearing Contact Lenses: Because it interferees with eye lids' lubrication, there can be issues wearing contact lenses.

5. Chalazion: A Chalazion occurs when there is an impasse in one of the small oil glands at the end of the eyelid, just at the rear of the eyelashes. The gland is prone to get affected by the bacteria, which causes swollen, red colored eye. Chalazion is more active on the inside of the eyelid.

6. Cornea Injury: Frequent irritation from inflamed eyelids may cause an ulcer to grow on the cornea. Inadequate tear could impact a corneal infection.

Tests and Diagnosis

Various tests and examinations are performed to diagnoseose Blepharitis including:

1. Eyelid Examination: Your eye specialist will closely examine eye lids and eyes. He / she may bring forth a magnifying glass to get a closer and clear look.

2. Washing Skin for Testing: In some cases, your eye specialist will use a swab to collect a sample of oil or dust that accumulates on your eyelid. This sample is to check whether allergy is caused by bacteria or fungi.

Nature of this disease is it rarely disappears altogether. However, you can easily manage the symptoms with rinsing your eyes with warm water, applying a warm compress etc. before ordering an appointment with the doctor.

Is There A Connection Between Your Carpet And Your Allergy Symptoms?

The common belief that carpets aggravate symptoms of asthma and allergies may turn out to be only a myth. There is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that a carpet itself does not cause allergic reactions: a carpet may even help in reducing the amount of airborne pollutants and allergens in your home – the true cause of your allergies.

What is the connection between your carpets and your asthma and allergy attacks? And – is there any? Only a few decades ago, the Swiss government granted orders to remove all carpets from government buildings and national institutions, for public health reasons. Many doctors advised their patients suffering from allergies to remove the carpeting from their homes.

If authorities like the government bodies and medical doctors think that your carpets may be contributing to the allergy and asthma attacks then you must be true? The truth is – it depends! Your carpet is like a giant air filter that acts like a trap for all airborne particles in your home, including allergens. Particles like dust and other allergens float in the air and settle on hard surfaces, where they're easily stirred up in the air again. Any time that you walk across your carpet, these particles become airborne again.

When you vacuum and other work to maintain your carpets, you remove all those allergens trapped in the carpeting. A well-maintained carpet can actually improve your allergy and asthma symptoms by keeping the number of airborne allergens in check, and then before your indoor air cleaner. However, if you let the allergens build up in your carpeting, the indoor air quality will degrade, and the allergy and asthma sufferers will have a flare-up of their problems.

It is unfortunate that carpets got to be associated with allergies and similar health problems, because it can be argued convincingly that the exact opposite is true. The airborne dust that accumulates in unkempt carpeting is the culprit! Get rid of the allergens lurking in your carpets by increasing the vacuum frequency and performing a “deep clean” from time to time.

It is recommended to get your carpets cleaned by a professional cleaning service at least once a year, especially if you have allergy sufferers in your household. Your carpets will not only look good and last longer, but the indoor air quality in your home will improve. All carpet owners can now breathe a sigh of relief!

The Top 5 Natural Remedies

Recipes which have been made with the help of ingredients found in Nature and at home are known as Home Remedies. You will be able to get these types of ingredients in the nutrient content of fruits and vegetables or compounds in plants in herbs and plants.

Stop nausea: If you are suffering from nausea, you can try the frozen ginger chips which are the best natural remedy. In order to effectively use them, you should soak the fresh ginger in hot water. Now simply strain it, and then freeze it in ice cube trays. Take out the ice tray and crush the cubes and suck these frozen ginger chips through the day.

Soothe a sore throat: In order to soothe your sore throat, you should gargle daily for at least two times in a day with the help of a solution of 6 garlic cloves which have been pressed and mixed into a glass of warm water. The water should not be hot. Continue with the procedure for three days. The warm liquid is able to soothe your inflamed tissue.

Get rid of your hiccups: By swallowing 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar, you will be able to get rid of your hiccups. It works as the dry granules stimulate your nerve in order to reset your irritated nerve.

Cool a burn: If any part of your body has been infected with a burn, you can relive it by grazing the infected part of your body with a hot-from-the-oven cookie pan. Now simply apply aloe Vera gel to the burn as well and when needed. You will get immediate relief.

Reduce a fever: In order to reduce fever you can sip linden flower tea. This type of tea works effectively in two ways: In the first instance it will stimulate the hypothalamus in order to control your temperature. In the second way it will dilate the blood vessels and produce sweating. You can make this mixture by steeping 1 tablespoon of the dried herb in a cup of hot water for about 15 minutes and then sip it. You should drink three to four cups a day. If you are still having a high temperature even after sipping the tea, consult your doctor.

If you have a fever which is above 102 ° F, you should take a tepid bath. This bath will simply cool your body so that it matches the water temperature. You should continue bathing till your temperature comes down to 101 ° to 102 ° F and then take a sip of the linden flower tea so as to minimize temperature even further.

These are some of the natural ways to cure your health problems.

UV Light and Air Conditioning: A Best Kept Secret for Real Allergy and Asthma Reduction?

It may sound overly simplistic, but usually, when you're trying to solve a problem, you need to figure out what the true cause (s) are and eliminate those and you solve the problem, right? Concerns allergies & asthma, it's often airborne particles that cause the majority of the symptoms. And air filtration systems often do help with removing those airborne particles and chemicals, but still, some allergy & asthma sufferers can not seem to really get the relief they're searching for.

So what's the problem? Clearly there is still something in the air that is causing problems, right? Exactly. And what has been discovered in research is that the live bacteria, dust mites and mold spores coming from the air conditioning ducts and HVAC system coils are often regularly getting inhaled by allergy & asthma sufferers, which creates a regular internal allergic response, which is understood Since mold spores and dust mites (and dust mite body parts) are one of the most allergic and asthma-reaction causing agents known to man. And these pollutants are being inhaled either because there is no HEPA filtration system in the home, the air purifier unit is inadequately equipped with substandard filters, or does not have enough ouput or air-cycling power to remove the particles before they're inhaled .

UV air cleaners are a good solution to this issue because the UV light and negative ions produced not only kill those bacteria, mold, viruses, & dust mites before they have a chance to blow out of the duct work, but also cause them to clump together and fall out of the air. This clumping action actually helps HEPA filters trap the dust & particles better as well, which will leave even less pollutant in the air. And even if you do not add any new room air purifiers to your home or office, the fact that the germs are being killed and falling out of the air more often is going to significantly improve your air quality and reduce allergy & asthma symptoms. UV light air cleaners are often so effective that allergy & asthma sufferers notice a tremendous improvement in air quality and symptom reduction in as little as 24-48 hours-without even having any room air purifiers running.

So, to get a quick, noticeable reduction in allergy, asthma, sinus or respiratory symptoms, we recommend a two-bulb, 36 watt per bulb, UV light air purifier system , installed in the output ducts of your HVAC system. We recommend two 36 watt bulbs because two bulbs creates enough light units to destroy over 99% of germs on the first pass. And we recommend installing the UV unit on the output side of your HVAC system to make sure that you're killing any bacteria, mold or viruses that come from the coil (a common breeding ground for germs). For the very best, cleanest air possible, install a two bulb system and have a couple of top-rated air purifiers running as well, with true HEPA and carbon filters. That combination has proved very effective for chronic allergy & asthma reduction in almost every case.

If you suffer from chronic allergies & asthma, we hope that this article helps you get the relief you deserve. Please feel free to contact us below if you have any questions.

What Happens During An Allergic Reaction

Allergic reactions may occur under various circumstances. Its symptoms are sometimes similar to another type of allergy. Sneezing, red eyes and itchy red marks are some similar symptoms of many types of allergy. According to some research, for you to understand what happens during allergic reaction, you must first identify the individual agent that causes the allergy. You should also be aware about typical symmetry that takes place in your body or simply known as your body's defense mechanism. Look at it this way. If your body temperature arises you start to sweat for your body to cool down. If you are cold your body is shivering in order to get warm. An allergic reaction is just like this. It happens in responses to the peripheral agent that causes your allergy. The response is stern and possibly your body's reaction is either normal nor undesirable.

Literally, the allergic reaction you are experiencing may be causes of hundredfold of allergy and this retests could be conveyed in a hundredfold ways. Like for example, you get allergy from eating pineapples while your friends get allergy from eating bananas. Another instance is that when your friend sneezes if he or she scents your perfume or if dogs or kitties are near and or if you get red rushes after cleaning your dusty ceiling. These are samples of allergic reaction.

Any type of allergic reaction and its first symptoms may appear while you are still young. In addition, allergy could also be inherited from parents and there are also cases that it just development as the individual get older and expose to various detrimental substance from the environment. If one of your parents has asthma it does not mean that all their children will inherit the same signs and symptoms of asthma. It could be other way around. Possibly, if you do not acquire asthma then one of your siblings may acquire it. Or if you acquire asthma, your asthma reaction and symptoms may differ from your parents or siblings. However, since your parents have asthma then you and the rest of your siblings will be susceptible to this kind of allergy. In additional, your inherited allergy may not manifest until you get older. There are also cases that although the individual has allergy, there is no signs of allergic reaction that occurred during his or her early years, instead it manifests as she or he gets older. This situation shows that her or his body is healthy enough to protect and anticipate over any types of allergic attack or she never encountered yet the kind of substance that could pilot a visible allergic reaction.

In whatever occurrences of allergy you have experienced, just always keep in mind that allergic reaction is triggered by a certain kind of agent which you need to determine first before thinking of curing your allergy. If you do not know the cause of your allergy then it is useless to think about the curing process. Ask your trusted physician about it for they can certainly help you.

How Did I Catch Celiac Disease?

When a patient is told their unsuccessful stomach symptoms are caused by Celiac Disease, one of their first questions is often about how, or why, or where they cure the disease

This is not surprising as most diseases like measles, or malaria, or even the common cold are described as being caught. These diseases I would describe as illnesses and the patient will hopefully recover from them after a period of time.

Celiac Disease is different. I would describe it as a condition, because it has been caused by a change in the way your body functions. It is not some sort of bug you have caught and it can not be cured.

As it is a condition, the patient has to learn how to adapt to the new way of life, after understanding the 'rules' the condition has imposed on them.

So what is happening? Where has this condition come from, and why that particular person? The patient often says “Why Me”.

Firstly, there can be a genetic reason. There have been studies done that show Celiacs, (Those people who are suffering from Celiac Disease) often have certain common genes in their system

So, if, at conception, their particular gene pattern, inherited from the two parents included these particular genes … they would be a possible candidate for Celiac Disease sometimes in their life.

The onset of Celiac Disease is usually triggered by the immune system. The immune system is a sort of firewall to protect you as an individual. It senses out anything that it thinks will attack your body's means of functioning.

Once it has decided that something is an 'enemy' it takes action to, in theory, exterminate it and protect the person's body.

Celiac Disease does not fit completely with that simplistic pattern, but the immune system has determined that gluten is a danger to your body, and cant be tolerated. The effect is to destroy the fingerlike projections that grow on the wall of your small intestines that are called villi. That stops the body absorbing the protein known as gluten.

The unfortunate side effect is that without the villi the body cant absorb the other nutrients that it needs to grow and thrive.

The good news is that if you remove every trace of gluten from your diet, the immune system will be happy and the villi will be able to re-grow, and your body will be able to absorb the nutrients you need.

This is a very simplistic view, but I hope it will help you to start the process of learning about the new way of life you are going to have to take on permanently.

I am a psychotherapist who has worked with patients in the same position as you, for many years. I have written a special report, which you can download for free by clicking the report's title at the end of this article.

After reading it I would welcome your comments and questions, as I want to help you achieve a healthy and comfortable way of life, now you know you have this condition known as Celiac Disease.

I look forward to meeting you very soon through the information you will receive in the free report entitled

You are Lucky if you have been Diagnosed with Celiac Disease

Why Do the Corners of My Mouth Split?

A couple of years ago I had a problem with my mouth – both the started started splitting, causing very painful open sores. I still get these every now and again, and wanted to let people know what the cause is for me in the hope it might help others.

Searching for a solution

At first, I thought they were cold sores, and used the relevant treatment from the chemist. I usually use Zovirax for cold sores, but this was not working.

I try to be health conscious and thought it might be some sort of vitamin deficiency. I thought it unilaterally, as I already took a number of supplements, but decided to do some research into this problem with my trusty friend Mr Google.

The medical term for this sort of problem is Angular Cheilitis , and it's cause seems a bit of a mystery. Is it a cold sore? Is it an iron / vitamin B / vitamin C deficiency? Is it an infection?

I tried boosting my intake of these vitamins and iron, but nothing seemed to work.

In fact, the sores seemed to be getting worse, and I found myself constantly applying vaseline or lip balm to sooth the sores. I even surprised if this was causing the sores to get worse.

The surprise discovery

After a couple of months, I was driven mad with this, and even considered taking a day off work to visit my doctor. (I was working on a contract, so would not have been paid for a trip to the doctor!)

By Chance, I happened to be talking to a college about this and he said he had exactly the same problem in the past. He went through the same process of trying different treatments, until he discovered the cause:

Toothpaste

Yes, that's right. It was the toothpaste he was using at the time that caused his problem. I thought back to when this problem started, and we had changed our brand of toothpaste just a week or so before it developed.

I immediately changed back to my old toothpaste, and to my amazement, the sores went away within a week.

I had nearly forgotten about this, but in the last few days I have been getting a tingle in the corners of my mouth – a sign that they might be splitting soon. And guess what? We recently changed brand of toothpaste again!

I would like to do more research into the ingredients that cause this, so will be keeping a list of toothpastes that cause it. So far, I have two –

Aquafresh – one of their stripy varieties. I try to avoid all stripy ones these days.

Pronamel – Gentle Whitening variety. I have used some other Pronamel toothpastes without any problem.

Having lived with these sores for nearly two months in the past, and knowing the embarrassment it causes, I hope that this might help someone out there.

Here's a disclaimer in case one of these toothpaste companies tries to sue me – This post in no way attempts to prove that there is a link between toothpaste, in particular the brands mentioned, and Angular Cheilitis. Everything written here is my own opinion and is based on my own experience.

Food Allergy Alert: Even a Trace Can Kill

It happens-and probably more often than you might think. Indeed, every three minutes someone with a food allergy reaction ends up in an emergency room. That makes for more than 200,000 such visits every year.

And that's both a very big deal and a growing problem, though no one is sure why. Says the CDC, food allergies in children increased some 50% between 1997 and 2011. The result: now one in every 13 children, 18 and younger, is affected-or about two in every classroom. Indeed, peanut allergies alone have more than tripled.

Meanwhile, about 15% of children do not even know they have an issue until that first allergic response – often at school.

These eight culprits account for some 90% of all serious allergic reactions:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Crustacean shellfish
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts

Some can be outgrown, such as milk and eggs, but not so others, and the bad news is there's no cure. Reactions run the gamut from mild-as in itchiness-to anaphylaxis which potentially life-threatening symptoms can include:

  • Swelling of throat, lips, and / or tongue
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Falling blood pressure
  • Shock
  • Unconsciousness

Truth be told, between 100 and 200 Americans actually die from food allergy-induced anaphylaxis each year.

The only treatment: an epinephrine auto-injector, otherwise known as an Epi-Pen. It delivers a measured dose of the drug and is often a life-saver. Timing is critical, however. Explains Sally Schoessler of the National Association to School Nurses, “You need a very quick response when it comes to administering epinephrine for anaphylaxis.”

All this puts schools on the front lines, and you can be assured that they're doing their best to keep affected children safe. Steps being taken include sending letters to all parents, requesting nut- and peanut-free snacks being sent in, offering allergy-free tables in the cafeteria, and asking that children not share their bagged lunches and snacks.

At the same time – and since almost 90% of America's schools now have one or more children with a food allergy – the CDC has come up with a list of school guidelines:

  1. “Avoid using foods identified as allergens in class projects, parties, snacks, science experiments, and cooking exercises in allergic children's classrooms.
  2. Train staff to use injecting devices for the medication epinephrine (such as Epi-Pens) when students have severe allergic reactions-known as anaphylaxis.
  3. Make sure children with food allergies are not excluded from field trips, extracurricular activities, physical education, or recess.
  4. Consider designating food free-zones or allergen-safe zones.
  5. Use non-food incentives for prizes, gifts, and awards. ”

And because the alarm has now been sounded, this year 16 states joined 11 others in enacting laws to make it easier for schools to stock epinephrine. Four of them-Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, and Virginia-require schools to have it on hand at all times. The others allow schools to do so without a prescription for individual students and all “provide legal protection for staff members who administer it.”

Elsewhere, as in Pennsylvania, legislation is pending, with fingers crossed that it passes soon. After all, it takes just one peanut …

Diseases Spread by Mosquitoes

Apart from the irritating buzz that mosquitoes do to any human's ears, they are very dangerous and could pose lethal threats for people from all walks of life and of any age. Typically, children and adults are easily infected and contract the disease from the mosquitoes but now even healthy adults can contract the disease. A theory states that some of them do mutate and adapt to their environment. Some of which grow immune to some toxins which are formulated to kill them while some adapt to live in certain conditions which are not natural for them but can multiply meagrely in.

It is important to have mosquito control in your home such as cleaning your home and draining out the stagnant water and frequently fumigate the concessions. Some home owners prefer to go natural by using citronella to shoo away the mosquitoes.

But if you do not take precautions and prevent mosquitoes from your home, here are some illnesses that you most, hopefully not, likely will encounter with.

1. West Nile Virus
The classified flavivirus does not only affect the West Nile area but the whole globe. It is transmitted via mosquitoes which are specifically called the prime vectors. Incubation period is usually between 2 to 15 days and the sufferers will experience fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, myalgias and rash. The good news is that 1% of all cases are severe and typically lead to central nervous system problems such as encephalitis, meningitis and polio myelitis. There s no vaccine for it and the only way to avoid it is mosquito control.

2. Malaria
Malaria is a parasite that feeds on human blood. The symptoms are usually chills, high fever and flu-like illness, anemia and jaundice. This type of virus is usually found in Southeast Asia and affects the macaques there and subsequently affected the humans. One type of malaria is preventable but can lead to worse cases even death. Most of the casualties are children in developing countries. As for prevention, you should avoid going to mosquito infected places and use mosquito repellents. Vaccines are not applicable for this parasite since it often changes it surface and adapts based on their surroundings.

3. Dengue
One of the most notorious diseases thought about the mosquitoes, particularly the Anopheles kind. The most popular infected areas are Latin America and South East Asia but not only limited to that. Symptoms include fever, joint pains, headaches, skin rash and the dreaded dengue hemorrhagic fever which leads to bleeding, low platelet count and blood plasma leakage and the dengue shock syndrome where the blood pressure drops. The ways to treat dengue is through rehydration, intravenous of fluids and sometimes blood transfusion for other cases.

Is Climate Change Driving Up Rates of Allergies and Asthma?

The rates of allergy and asthma have increased significantly in recent decades. Rates have doubled from the period between 1976-1980 to the period spanning from 1988-1994. The revealing data was reported at the 2013 annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. The report also showed that rates of people with both allergy and asthma also jumped sharply in recent decades.

Perhaps what is even more important than the data itself, however, was the investigators' suggestion that the increasing allergy and asthma burden in the United States may be a result of a changing climate.

It has already been shown that pollen counts have been much higher and more potent allergically today than they once were in the past. The pollen season also appears to be growing significantly longer than in the past. In 2011, the heads of the American Medical Association and the American Public Health Association even announced that rising temperatures may be contributing to asthma severity by increasing levels of pollution smog.

The current study, which used data from two National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), found that in NHANES II (1976-1980), 2.5% of respondents reported asthma, 9% reported oral or nasal symptoms, and 19% had a skin test reaction. This was compared to NHANES III (1988-1994), when a significantly greater 5% reported asthma, nearly 30% reported oral or nasal symptoms, and close to 42% tested sensitive on skin tests.

However, the new data does not prove that the rising rates are due to climate change, although they do seem to support prior studies showing increasing pollen counts in the air. Jay Portnoy, MD, of Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo, who was not involved in the study, explained:

“They've [previously] been able to show there is more pollen today and the pollen is more potent as an allergen … Climate change does seem to be having an effect … so what they're looking for here is a signal that the change in pollen burden in the air is associated with changes in clinical effects. “

If you are one of the millions affected by allergies or asthma, one of the best strategies you can take is improving your indoor air quality and allergy-proofing your house so you can at least breathe easier in the comfort of your own home. As for climate change, regardless of where you stand on this controversial issue, every one of us can benefit from paying greater attention to our global footprint …

Great Things to Know About Selecting a Comforter Set

Using natural materials in your bedroom has several advantages over using synthetic materials. It is important to understand that artificial materials are made from petroleum products with the help of volatile solvents. These solvents may still come out of the bedding when it is on your bed and cause a myriad of health problems. They may also exacerbate allergies and other respiratory illnesses.

Chemicals coming out of synthetic comforter sets may stress your respiratory track and make you more susceptible to respiratory infections. Residual chemical particles which may be hidden deep inside bedding made out of man-made materials could potentially cause skin irritations, which may result in itching and hives. They may also penetrate your skin and end up in your blood stream, potentially affecting your inner organs.

Comforters made of natural materials and free of chemicals do not carry these health risks. Comforters made out of 100% cotton, are not only beautiful and opulent, they may also help you sleep better. That's because cotton absorbs moisture, keeping you comfortable at night. Synthetics do not absorb moisture and may make you feel clammy and cold.

For individuals that are suffering from asthma or allergies, using sheets, warrants and pillow cases created from natural materials may have significant benefits. Natural materials, especially cotton, can usually be washed and sometimes even washed at high temperatures to remove allergens that may cause asthma attacks. Synthetic materials typically do not tolerate washing at high temperatures and that will not get clean. Some synthetic bedding does not tolerate washing at all and keeps dirty or needs to be dry-cleaned. After dry cleaning bedding, you'll be sleeping under a comforter containing chemical residues.

Even doctors frequently recommend natural bedding materials for all patients that are suffering from asthma, just to make sure that their condition will not be worsened by lying on chemically treated fabrics. One bad night for asthma patient can cause an asthma attack that takes days or even weeks to recover from. For asthma patients, prevention is the key to effective treatment. Making the right choices of materials surrounding you is an easy way to start.

Cotton bedding does not mean you have to compromise on style. Long gone are the days of plain white or blue sheets. Today there is a wide variety of elegant choices that fit every style. From modern printed patterns to traditional, ornately embroidered comforters or duvets, there is an option for every taste. These styles are also available in all common sizes, such as Twin, Full, Queen, King and even California King.

Finally, it is important to understand that comforter sets and duvets made of natural materials are not only better for your health, they are also very affordable. There really is no reason not to switch to natural bedding and start enjoying the benefits.

Whole House Air Purification Systems: Solving Tough Allergy Problems in The Home

Many people are quite sensitive to airborne particles and other allergens, some they know about and others they may not be aware of. Often, those with tough allergies, MCS, and other sensitivities purchase a HEPA air cleaner thinking that will be all that they need for relief, and then find that their allergies or reactions have not improved much or at all. That's usually because the person is actually more sensitive to chemical vapors that are floating around in the home – something a HEPA filter can not remove. And what most people do not realize about mold is that they produce airborne chemicals or 'aflatoxins' that can cause allergic reactions too, not just the mold spores.

Why? A lot of portable HEPA air cleaners either do not contain effective carbon filters or have no carbon filter at all. So in case of some allergies or sensitivities to cooking, pet or other odors that will not go away, it makes sense to install a full home air filtration system with a good amount of activated carbon in the filters so that it can continue remove the chemical vapors and odors from your whole home, while the HEPA filter is removing over 99% of any particles or dust.

A whole home air cleaner attaches, ideally, to the output section of the HVAC system. By attaching to this area of the furnace or HVAC system, any pollutants that come from collected particles, mold, bacteria, etc on the coil will be trapped, which is better for your health. And, any chemical or gas type pollutants such any leaking Freon residue or vapors that might be attached those dust particles coming from the coil, will also be trapped. The duct work after where the air cleaner attaches is almost always loaded with dust, mold, and bacteria and if you're not going to or can not afford a duct cleaning job, the next best thing is to use your HEPA room air cleaners with a full home air cleaner, which in the long run, will give you cleaner air since the ducts will probably become dirty again within about a year anyway.

Your best full home air filtration systems will also have a HEPA filter (such as Aller Air), so you'll be removing both offending vapors and particles at the same time. So, again, our very best recommendation for those with severe allergies, MCS or other sensitivities, is to use a combination of a whole house air cleaner attached to the air conditioner, and one or two portable HEPA air cleaners in the rooms where you spend the most time. This way, the whole house unit will be removing any chemical or gas type pollutants from the entire house, and the portable room air purifiers will be removing any particles (especially those particles that tend to blow out of the duct work after the air cleaner) .
